Parents Events
Parents’ events are activities where parents are targeted with information (written and verbal) and given dishes to taste test with the aim of increasing the frequency with which parents offer their children fruit and vegetables. Parent events are best ‘piggy backed’ on to other school activities like sports days or report nights. Food tasting is a good draw card but even considering this, it is difficult to get large numbers of parents interested. Health professionals can run the taste testing or these may be conducted by enthusiastic (and trained) parents or Nutrition and Dietetic students. We have included a section on How to Run Parent Events in Schools
(106.85 Kb).
We allow $25 per school per term to cover the costs of ingredients for taste testing for parents (the food won’t go far if children are included, so do try and restrict it to parents).
We run a parent event per school per term on a different theme such as fruit and vegetables in lunchboxes and sneaking vegies into meals (see our Parent Event Case Studies). For use at your parent event we have Recipe Handouts and Parent Handouts and there are other useful handouts, books and recipes in Handouts and Recipe Ideas for Parents.
Each parent event is evaluated using the usual Event Summary Sheet event_summary_sheet.
