Home Environment - Introduction
Influencing the home environment via Primary schools is not an easy thing to do. Our process evaluation indicated to us that by providing a whole range of strategies designed to impact on attitudes and availability of vegetables and fruit at home, Tooty Fruity Vegie was able to change parents knowledge, skills and attitudes. By undertaking a range of methods and messages Tooty Fruity Vegie aims to reach individuals with differing skill and interest levels and to create an awareness and interest in the aim of increasing vegetable and fruit consumption. This section has a reproduceable Calendar, all the newsletter items and a Parent Event “How to” kit for your project to reach into the home environment.
The Tooty Fruity Vegie Calendar is provided at the beginning of the year and children personalise it to take home. Each new month has ideas for lunchboxes, meal preparation, recipes and gardening ideas.
A Tooty Fruity Vegie Newsletter with vegetable and fruit promoting ideas and information on the project is for inclusion in the school newsletter twice a term.
The Parent Event Kit has guidelines on how to undertake and evaluate events such as cooking demonstrations, tastings, and healthy lunchbox displays. The aim is to hold a parent event once a term and to try and involve helper parents to do it with you. There are a number of case studies included to provide inspiration.
