| Smoking remains the leading cause of death and disease in Australia. Reducing tobacco use and its harm is a priority for NSW Health and North Coast Area Health Service. Current activities include: | ![]() |
- Developing and improving services to help people quit smoking
- Stopping illegal supply of cigarettes to young people
- Countering attempts of tobacco companies to market tobacco to young people
- Improving community awareness and education about secondhand smoke and strongly encouraging parents to not smoke around children (Car and Home Smoke Free Zone) campaign
- Working with pubs and clubs to ensure they are Smoke Free
- Working to reduce the number of women who smoke during pregnancy.
Smoke Free Health Care -
NSW Health policy requires all North Coast Area Health Service premises to be totally Smoke Free. This includes inside buildings and outside on the surrounding grounds. This policy on the North Coast is known as Smoke Free Health Care.
