Tobacco Action
![]() | ![]() |
Smoking is the largest preventable cause of death and disease in Australia. Research shows that half of all people who smoke will die as a result of their smoking. Secondhand smoke also harms non-smokers. On the North Coast 19.6% of adults smoke which is slightly higher than the NSW rate of 17.7% (2006).
North Coast Area Health Service tobacco team is made up of staff from the Public Health Unit and the Health Promotion Unit. Our aim is to reduce both the number of people who smoke and the harm caused by tobacco smoke in the North Coast area.
Remember:
- Smoking is the single greatest preventable cause of death and disease
- It is never too late to quit - there are immediate health benefits
- Smoking is an addiction - not a lifestyle choice or habit
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy can help you quit smoking
- Research shows that the majority of the public support smoking bans
- Tobacco control is cost-effective
The North Coast Area Health Service is currently undertaking a number of tobacco related projects.
