Human Research Ethics

Human Research EthicsHealthier people now and in the future

The North Coast Area Health Service (NCAHS) Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) reviews Ethics Applications for Human Research studies to be conducted only within the NCAHS facilities or involving participants recruited from patients/clients of the NCAHS undertaken within NCAHS facilities, and by formal agreement with external entities within the NCAHS geographical area.

All research involving humans, whether relating to health or not, that involves more than low risk is subject to full ethical review. All research proposals involving more than low risk must be submitted on the National Ethics Application Form for review by the full NCAHS Human Research Ethics Commmittee (HREC).

For research that is either negligible risk or low risk the Application Form for Ethical and Scientific Review of Low and Negligible Risk Research must be completed and submitted to the NCAHS HREC for expedited review.

In addition to ethical approval, a Site Specific Assessment (SSA) approval is required.

No research is to be undertaken until both ethics and SSA approval have been granted.
