What can partners do to help breastfeeding?

There are many ways to offer support to a breastfeeding mother

  • Thank her for being a wonderful mother
  • Talk to her about what you can do to help
  • Provide and ensure privacy (if wanted) for breastfeeding
  • Encourage fluids and good nutrition for the mother
  • Provide protection for the mother: assess possible restriction of visitors, encourage phone off the hook for rest perisods, assess the extra workload of house guests
  • Minimise business and other stress activities
  • Understand that having a new baby can be very tiring for both of you so share and assist with household chores such as preparing meals.
  • Provide a comfortable chair and footstool
  • Try to have time alone with your partner, your baby and yourself.
  • Get involved in the daily need of your baby, for example by  changing nappies, giving baths, going for walks, playing with and cuddling your baby.
