What can partners do to help breastfeeding?
There are many ways to offer support to a breastfeeding mother
- Thank her for being a wonderful mother
- Talk to her about what you can do to help
- Provide and ensure privacy (if wanted) for breastfeeding
- Encourage fluids and good nutrition for the mother
- Provide protection for the mother: assess possible restriction of visitors, encourage phone off the hook for rest perisods, assess the extra workload of house guests
- Minimise business and other stress activities
- Understand that having a new baby can be very tiring for both of you so share and assist with household chores such as preparing meals.
- Provide a comfortable chair and footstool
- Try to have time alone with your partner, your baby and yourself.
- Get involved in the daily need of your baby, for example by changing nappies, giving baths, going for walks, playing with and cuddling your baby.
