What You Need To Organize, and Bring to Hospital When You Come to Give Birth

Before leaving home please call the Women's Care Unit where you have booked in to have your baby, and let them know that you are on your way, as this will allow the midwives time to prepare for your admission.

FOR THE MOTHER

  • Birthing clothing e.g. big T-shirt (if desired) socks, oil for massage, barley sugars,
  • You may like to fruit juices to have whilst in labour, however it is wise to avoid orange juice asthe acidity makes alot of women in labour vomit. Pear or apple juice are recommended.
  • Comfortable casual clothing to wear during the day.
  • Nightwear eg: front opening pyjamas or nighties-to make breastfeeding easier
  • Dressing gown, slippers.
  • Underwear-maternity bras, Nursing pads (approx. 2 packs)
  • Toiletries: Toothbrush and paste, deodorant, shampoo etc. large box of tissues
  • You will require maternity sanitary pads while in hospital, please make sure to bring at least 2 packets
  • Medical fund book and/or Medicare Card
  • Antenatal record card
  • Pen, notepaper, etc.
  • Phone card, coins

FOR THE BABY

  • You may wish to bring a nappy lotion of your choice.
  • You need to bring your own nappy fastener
  • A set of clothes to take baby home in
  • For those mothers who choose to bottle feed their babies you will need to bring your own formula, teats, bottles and sterilising equipment.

APPROVED CHILD RESTRAINTS FOR THE CAR ARE ESSENTIAL - MAKE SURE YOU ARRANGE TO HAVE ONE FITTEED TO YOUR CAR WELL BEFORE THE DUE DATE.
