About the facility

Murwillumbah District Hospital is a 102-bed rural general hospital. Murwillumbah is located 30 kilometres south-west of Tweed Heads and is the administrative and geographical centre of the Tweed Valley. This area is renowned for its sub-tropical climate and diverse environment, ranging from the Tweed Coast beaches through to world heritage national parks.

The hospital provides a range of services including medical, surgical, high dependency, maternity and paediatric care. The hospital also provides a specialist rehabilitation service and emergency services.

Access to ongoing support, professional development

(study days) including supernumerary time and orientation

New graduates have a one week orientation and are then supernumerary for two weeks at the beginning of each rotation. Study days are factored into the program to utilise the education sessions available at The Tweed Hospital.

The hospital has a campus of NRUDRH (Northern Rivers University Department of Rural Health) on site which provides weekly videoconference education sessions, a research seminar series, satellite rural health broadcasts and monthly student teacher education sessions.

Rotations

The new graduates have a six month rotation in both Surgical and Medical wards. There may be an opportunity for a brief supernumerary rotation through Emergency during theatre closure time, but this is subject to change depending on staffing and theatre closure periods.

Intakes

The hospital intake is two graduates in January each year. This is a temporary full-time 12-month contract for new graduate nurses.

Where to from here-career opportunities, speciality programs, employment opportunities

There may be opportunities for ongoing employment at both this hospital and other North Coast Area Health Service facilities at the completion of the program. These will be dependent upon staff vacancies at that time.
