About the facility

The Tweed Hospital (TTH) is located in the City of Tweed Heads, and is the most northerly hospital in the State of New South Wales and metres away from Coolangatta on the Queensland border. Catchment Population resides in the Southern Gold Coast and Tweed Valley, with population projections of 200 000 by 2011.  

The Tweed Hospital is the major acute care provider and referral facility with 220 beds and various specialties including emergency (40,500 presentations), critical care, internal medicine, surgical services ,obstetrics, paediatrics, mental health and clinical support services. 


The hospital accomodates 26,000 Admissions and 6,100 Surgical Operations per annum. It has a Teaching Unit and links to Southern Cross, Sydney, Griffith, Bond and Charles Sturt Universities.

Access to ongoing support, professional development

(study days) including supernumerary time and orientation

All grads will attend a two day orientation to the NCAHS and The tweed Hospital.

 There will be a two week period of supernumerary time during which you will spend some time being oriented to the wards as well as attending several hours each day of theoretical workshops which are designed to assist you with your transition from university to the workplace.  During this time you will be given several Learning Activity Packages which you will be asked to complete over the duration of several months.  The packages include; Drug Calculations, Basic Life Support, IV Therapy, PICC Lines.

 You will be provided with an opportunity to attend a number of study days scattered throughout the year. The study days will address key clinical and professional issues and concerns you may have about various clinical activities and interventions.

 You can also request to attend other Staff Development sessions as they are offered throughout the year.

Rotations

The rotations offered will be either surgical or medical or a combination of both surgical and medical. Opportunities will be given to graduates to elect their preferred ward/s and every effort will be made to accommodate requests.

Clinical placements can be either in one ward for 12 months or a combination of two wards with 6 months placement in each ward.

  • Paediatrics

     Speciality Development Programs, i.e.  Joint Agreement between Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus and The Tweed Hospital are offered in:

  • Intensive Care 
  • Emergency Department 
  • Coronary Care (not always offered) 

Accommodation

There is no accommodation on campus at the Tweed Hospital. Accommodation will need to be found in either Tweed Heads or the surrounding villages and towns along the coast or across the boarder into Queensland.

Social activities

There are a range of social activities available throughout the Tweed/Byron network, the Gold Coat and in near by Brisbane ranging from restaurants, theatres and services clubs to outdoor activities.

The Northern Rivers and the Gold Coast offer beaches, rivers and mountains for those who favour outdoor life.

With Surfers Paradise only 30 minutes drive away and Brisbane just over one hour there is a great deal of social activities to choose from.

Another favourable aspect is the fact that the Gold Coast Air Port is little more than ten minuted drive from the hospital. The airport services the major cities including Sydney and Melbourne with flights to Adelaide and Canberra. As well international flights from the airport connect with New Zealand and various Asian destinations with a link to London. Schools and Universities

There is a campus of the South Cross University in Tweed Heads and a new campus is under construction near the Gold Coast Airport.

 here is a campus of Griffith University in the Gold Coast, with Bond University at Robin. Both there universities are located in Queensland.

There are TAFE Colleges at Kingscliff and Ballina as well as a Coolangatta.

There are a selection of preschools, primary and secondary schools in Tweed and the surrounding districts.
