Palliative And Cancer Care Volunteers Annual Conference

Posted: 21 October, 2009

Palliative Care and Cancer Care Volunteers from across the Richmond Valley and the Byron Shire held their Annual Conference at the Ballina RSL on Saturday the 17 October 2009.

“The Annual Conference celebrates the contribution Palliative Care and Cancer Care Volunteers have given over the past twelve months,” said Jo Cooper.

“The Volunteers contribute in many ways but mostly by visiting patients in their homes and providing Carers the opportunity for respite, so they can go shopping, pay their bills or have some time out to attend to their own needs. The Volunteers also provide support to the patients and their families in the Palliative Care Unit and the Lismore Base Hospital Cancer Care Unit,” Ms Cooper said.

Speakers at the Conference this year included:-

o Belinda Ayres a Music Therapist

o Ron Buckstein from Byron Hospice Service

o Caroline Byrne, Lawyer

o Christa MacDonald, Social Worker

Joanne Cooper, Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Consultant was the Master of Ceremonies for the day.
