Area Health Service Says Thanks To Its Nurses

Posted: 11 May, 2006

The 3,700 Registered and Enrolled Nurses working in hospital and community health facilities throughout the North Coast will have their professionalism and compassion for patients recognized on the occasion of International Nurses Day this Friday, 12 May 2006.

North Coast Area Health Service’s Director of Nursing, Anne O’Donoghue, described the day as ‘A great opportunity for acknowledging the contribution, commitment and expertise of nurses to the quality of care delivered to the region’s population.

“Our nurses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to provide care for the sick, injured and elderly, and appropriately they mark International Nurses Day on the anniversary of the birthday of history’s most celebrated nurse - Florence Nightingale, Ms O’Donoghue, said.

“Modern nursing has changed enormously, largely as a result of emerging technologies, but in many ways the personal and professional challenges are still great, and the career is an incredibly rewarding one.

“Nurses are continually adjusting their knowledge and gaining new skills to meet scientific advances. They have to be on their toes and vigilant about world trends, new practices and the latest research,” Ms O’Donoghue added.

Activities celebrating the many contributions made by nurses to North Coast public hospitals and community health centers are being held at various NCAHS facilities.

The NCAHS Directorate of Nursing and Midwifery will stage the ‘Showcasing Innovations in Clinical Practice Seminar’ on Friday 12 May at Grafton Racecourse’s Silks on Course Conference Centre. The seminar will highlight the latest developments in nursing practice to Nursing Staff and Nursing Managers who are able to attend.
