:: Melbourne to Coffs Harbour - Sarah Edwards, RT
I completed my degree in Radiation Therapy from RMIT University in 2007 and went onto complete my professional development year as part of the Victorian intern programme at Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne. Upon completion of my intern year in early 2008, job prospects for newly qualified Radiation Therapists in Victoria were limited to a small number of short term contracts. I decided to look further afield for a position.
I applied for a position at the North Coast Cancer Institute. I had spent a week holidaying in Port Macquarie while I was studying so knew a small amount about the region. I decided to further my knowledge of the region using resources available on the internet. I was very excited to be offered a position in Coffs Harbour.
I found the move to Coffs Harbour to be very smooth. One of my friends from RMIT had been offered another of the positions in Coffs Harbour so we made the move together. It was lovely to come into a department that was so happy to have new staff. I found that I became part of the team very quickly and really enjoyed working with the new equipment and technology and constantly growing and refining scope of practice.
The department here at Coffs Harbour is much smaller that I accustomed to. Both the buildings here in Coffs Harbour and in Port Macquarie are freestanding with the treatment bunkers above ground and their own small coffee shops. I have really enjoyed working more closely with the Nurses, Allied Health staff, Medical Physicists, Radiation Oncologists and Administration staff.
Coming from Melbourne I found winter in Coffs Harbour to be far more pleasant. I enjoyed telling my family and friends about lovely afternoons spent on the beach. I continue to explore the region like a tourist and have been on a day trip to the Gold Coast to visit Dreamworld, have been for walks in Dorrigo’s rainforests and enjoyed meals in the pubs of the outlining towns. Closer to home I have entertained myself with the many restaurants and cafes, lovely beaches, long lazy picnics, nice paths to walk and of course ice-skating and water-sliding at The Big Banana.
