:: Sea Change - Ann Jenkinson
Some years ago Ann Jenkinson was looking for a "sea change". She was tired of the rush and bustle of the big city and the long time it took to drive anywhere, so she decided to move with her three children to a place where the air was clean, and where the family would have time for each other and friends. When Ann was offered a position in Port Macquarie she was delighted because she knew the town well through enjoying a number of happy holidays there. She took the opportunity to make the break from city life and choose a healthy safe environment for her children to grow up in.
The children took a while to get used to their new home, missing their friends at first. But after a year they had settled in and made friends. Now they would never go back.
Ann was appointed to her position as Nurse Unit Manager of Radiation Oncology in January this year, and is very excited to be part of the changes affecting Cancer Services available to people living in her area. The new North Coast Cancer Institute will have a huge impact on local people's lives, because now they will be able to access treatment where they live rather than travelling to Sydney or another large centre. In the past many frail elderly folk have not been able to cope with the travel and have missed out on important treatments. Also for a lot of parents with children and work commitments in Port Macquarie, having to leave for treatment for long periods has had a hugely negative impact on their lives and wellbeing during that process. Now things will be different, people will be treated in their own community and Ann is naturally delighted to be part of the team that offers that new level of service.
Ann's management approach is one which is characterised by a team focused philosphy where planning and decision making are shared as much as possible amongst the team members. This inclusive environment is one in which all staff can feel valued and respected and develop close and effective working realtionships with their colleagues.
When she is not at work Ann is a very keen cyclist and finds both off road and on road cycling opportunities to be fantastic in this area. She is a keen sports-person and also enjoys hockey and jogging. Dining out and spending time with friends and family are other activities that Ann enjoys.
