The North Coast Cancer Institute at Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie encompasses medical oncology, radiation oncology, breast screening, haematology and palliative care services.   The design for both centres is similar.  The centres are detached from both hospitals but connected via a walkway. Each site has two bunkers constructed but only one linear accelerator is currently installed at each site.  A second linac is in the process of being installed at Coffs Harbour.

The North Coast Cancer Institute facilities have followed an incredibly comprehensive planning process which has involved a large number of key users. In addition to the user focus groups a core project team has been closely involved with the architect and builder in the design and have attempted to make the buildings work the way they should! The buildings have been designed to be sympathetic to the surroundings, making extensive use of natural light while maintaining a relaxed non clinical feeling.

New South Wales health department health facility guidelines that have been incorporated into the buildings. The buildings are also "smart” and packed with the latest communications technologies which include a network which is wireless ready, high-tech security and the latest building management systems to keep our occupants safe, comfortable and connected. The end result is that the area has two excellent buildings that will provide a patient and staff friendly environment able to meet the practical health care needs of our patients to the highest standard.

The benefits of the new integrated cancer care centres at Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour will enable community residents access to cancer services of the highest standard locally thus reducing the need to travel to metropolitan centres for treatment.
