Abusive behaviour isn’t just about hitting someone. Verbal and emotional abuse is a common problem. Constant shouting, threats and mind games can all be used as a form of control over your family and can be as damaging as physical abuse. All of these can create a tense atmosphere within the home.
Children in particular are deeply affected by witnessing abuse. It can restrict their emotional and mental development making it hard for them to reach their potential.

There are MEND groups in Lismore and Byron Bay, and groups run from time to time in other centres.
What is MEND ?
A group program for men troubled by their own violence and anger which was formed in 1995 as part of the Northern Rivers Men’s Resource Centre. MEND began because men in the region called Men'sline telephone counselling service for help in ending their abusive and violent behaviour. It is a community program designed to help relationships and improve family life.
MEND invites men to take responsibility for their actions. it looks at ways of dealing with anger and teaches how to work toward close and loving relationships. Communication skills will also be learned.
How does MEND operate?
Attending MEND involves an initial one to one interview with the option of a group program or further individual sessions. The group discussions provide an opportunity to talk with other men facing similar difficulties.
All sessions are confidential and calm, friendly, and do not lay blame. Our trained facilitators take part in the groups.

- Power and control
- Dealing with criticism
- Understanding feelings
- Intimacy
- Assertiveness
MEND is designed to help you stop hurting of frightening the people you love. This program can help you regain respectful relationships with your partner and children. It teaches you ways to reduce the tension in your home and learn to laugh again.
How much does MEND cost?
The fees vary from $10 - $35 per session depending on your income. Please talk to us if costs are a barrier, we try not to let money get in the way.
