- Four Steps to Equity - A Tool for Health Promotion Practice. This tool was developed as a part of the NSW Health Promotion Directors Equity Project. The overall goal of the project was to improve the way health promotion in NSW addresses and supports equity based health promotion action at the local and state level.
- Health Inequity – a review of the literature
A review conducted ( 2004) by the North Coast Area Health Promotion Unit, which provides an explanation of the Health Inequities literature. The Report is divided into 3 sections: Explaining Health Equity & its Language, The Determinants of Health, Framework for Reducing Health Inequities. - Social Determinants of Health: the solid facts. 2nd edition. Edited by Richard Wilkinson and Michael Marmot. WHO 2003.
The first publication outlines 10 different but interrelated aspects of the social determinants of health. The document explains the impact of the social gradient, stress, early life, social exclusion, work, unemployment, social support, addiction, food and transport on health outcomes.
The second publication examines the social gradient in health, and explains how psychological and social influences affect physical health and longevity. It then looks at what is known about the most important social determinants of health today, and the role that public policy can play in shaping a social environment that is more conducive to better health. - The Health of the People of NSW. Report of the Chief Health Officer 2004 (ECHO)
This report gives a comprehensive overview of the health of the people New South Wales. The report contains information on over 250 population health indicators. It present trends in key health indicators, demonstrates health inequities and highlights emerging health priorities and new health data susers. It is intended for a wide variety of users including public health practitioners, planners, policy analysts, researchers, students and health consumers. - The Interactive Social Atlas
The Interactive Social Atlas uses the information compiled for the Country Matters - Social Atlas of Rural and Regional Australia using the latest ABS Population and Housing Census data to focus on the people and communities of non-metropolitan Australia.
The Interactive Social Atlas will let you create and download customized social atlas products for any region in Australia, by selecting a region of interest and all or some of the social data information you require. - NSW Health & Equity Statement

The Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) supports countries and global health partners to address the social factors leading to ill health and focus on health inequities. It draws the attention of society to the social determinants of health that are known to be among the worst causes of poor health and inequalities between and within countries. As part of the WHO's Commission on Social Determinants of Health, a knowledge hub for early child development has been established to raise the profile of early child development globally creating positive change for children in a range of country contexts. - Australian Health Promotion Association
The Australian Health Promotion Association website has a newly established section on the Social Determinants of Health which contains general information, books and reports, journal articles, national and international links, local videos and DVDs, and Powerpoint presentations on the social determinants of health. This site contains many valuable internet links to relevant sites. - Centre for Health Equity, Training, Research and Evaluation (CHETRE)
The Centre for Health Equity Training Research and Evaluation (CHETRE), was established in 1998 in collaboration with the Division of Population Health, Sydney South West Area Health Service, through a Research and Development Infrastructure Grant from NSW Health. CHETRE’s mission is to provide leadership and focus in training, research and evaluation in the area of health equity, with a particular emphasis on the development and evaluation of interventions to reduce health inequities.
CHETRE’s work focuses on the description and measurement of health inequalities and health equity, development and evaluation of policies, programs and other actions that aim to achieve health equity, and developing the capacity of the health system to more effectively address health equity through policy and program development. CHETRE’s work includes projects in the areas of community and primary health care service development, disadvantaged communities and populations, early childhood, Aboriginal health, unemployment, and Health Impact Assessment and health public policy. - Unatural Causes - Is Inequality Making us Sick?
Draws attention to the root causes of health and illness and helps reframe the debate about health in America. "Economic and racial inequality are not abstract concepts but hospitalize and kill even more people than cigarettes. The wages and benefits we're paid, the neighborhoods we live in, the schools we attend, our access to resources and even our tax policies are health issues every bit as critical as diet, smoking and exercise."
