Admissions /Bed Management Department
What does the Bed Management Department Do?
The Bed Management Department is responsible for making a patients admission to hospital easy informative and caring. We follow a patient’s wait for surgery from the time his or her operations is booked with the hospital to the time they arrive for surgery and a bed is allocated to the patient.
Booking In for Elective Surgery
Sometimes the wait for surgery can be long and frustrating. The Bed Management Department tries to keep patients as informed as possible about their waiting time for surgery. When a booking is made for admission to hospital (by your doctor), the Bed Management Department will post a letter of acknowledgement of receipt of the booking and will estimate a waiting time for that particular elective surgery the Bed Management Department phone numbers are given in case the patient has any questions about their waiting time. Where an admission is required urgently, patients are contacted by phone and advised of a date.
All patients are contacted every six months whilst they are on the waiting list and updated on their waiting time.
Admission to Lismore Base Hospital
In most cases the Bed Management Department will contact patients by phone and issue a theatre date for their surgery. Some doctors will allocate theatre dates for their patients and in these instances the patient will be contacted by the doctor’s receptionist.
Before a patient is admitted to hospital they may be asked to attend a Pre- Operative Clinic where he or she will meet a team of health care professionals who will assess and address any patients needs before coming in for surgery.
Admission instructions will be given to the patient at this time including where to go, what to bring and what time to arrive on their admission date.
On the Day of Surgery
Patients will be asked to arrive either at level 5 or 6, depending on the time of day, for their admission. They will be greeted by a member of the Bed Management Team and walked through the admission process by that person. This will include a brief summary of the admission process, confirmation of all patient details and signing of appropriate documentation.
From here the patients are put into the caring hands of the Nursing staff of the Peri Operative Unit where they will be prepared for their surgery.
