North Coast Network Populations
[Network ERPs & Population Projections] [Network Population Growth] [Network Population Pyramids]
Background
An important aspect of monitoring a population’s health is to track its demographic features: how large is the population, what is the ratio of males to females, what is its age composition, and how are these characteristics changing? Demographic trends not only reflect past health events, but also provide insights into the current and future health of the population1.
An ageing population, for example, is much more than a demographic trend. In the context of health, population ageing may translate into higher overall morbidity and mortality. An increasingly older population also places extra demands on health-care facilities1.
The population figures provided in this health profile are the latest available Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) estimated residential populations (ERPs) and population projections from the NSW Department of Planning. The mid-year (June) ERPs up to and including June 2006 are the official ABS ERPs, while the population projections for 2007 to 2031 are the official NSW Department of Planning projections 2005 v1.0 series. Mid-financial-year (December) estimates were calculated by cubic splines interpolation between the mid-calendar year estimates.
Within NSW, all government departments have been advised/directed to use one official source of population projections, produced by the NSW Department of Planning, so that all government agencies are using a consistent set of population figures.
