Deaths from all causes

Between 2002 and 2006, the all cause age-adjusted death rate of 636.5 per 100,000 population per annum for North Coast residents is similar to the NSW average (631.3 deaths per 100,000).   Male North Coast residents had an age-adjusted death rate of 782.4 per 100,000 population per annum (NSW males 777.2 deaths per 100,000), while female North Coast residents had an age-adjusted death rate of 510.2 per 100,000 population per annum (NSW females 515.6 deaths per 100,000). Neither were significantly different from the state average.

 

Causes of death

In the North Coast, between 2002 and 2006, there were 20,461 deaths of residents  – an average of 4,092 deaths each year.  More North Coast males died (10,955 deaths, 2,191 per year) than North Coast females (9,506 deaths, 1,901 per year).  Cardiovascular disease (37.4%) was the leading cause of death followed by cancer (29.9%), respiratory diseases (8.6%), and injury & poisoning (5%) .

 


Rates of death

The age-adjusted death rates for North Coast male and females residents were comparable with NSW averages for all major causes, with the exception of injury & poisoning for NCA males (61.49 per 100,000 population) which was signigicantly higher than the NSW average (50.48 per 100,000 population).
