Respiratory disease

For the period 2000 to 2004, the death rate for asthma in the NCA was 1.5 per 100,000 population, there is no significant variation when compared to the NSW average (2.0 per 100,000). Both North Coast males (1.1 per 100,000), and North Coast females (1.8 per 100,000), had low death rates when compared to the other Area Health Services, and were not significantly different to the state averages (NSW males = 1.6, NSW females = 2.3).

 

In 2004-05, the hospitalisation rate for asthma in the NCA was 212.7 per 100,000 population, there is no significant variation when compared to the NSW average (196.3 per 100,000). North Coast males (206.2 per 100,000), were similar to NSW males (199.0 per 100,000), and North Coast females (216.4 per 100,000), had significantly higher hospitalisation rates when compared to the NSW average (NSW females = 191.0).

 

Between 2000 and 2004, the death rate from Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for North Coast residents was 27.0 deaths per 100,000 people, which is similar to the NSW rate (26.4 per 100,000).

 

In 2004-05 in the NCA, the hospitalisation rate from COPD was 239.6 per 100,000 population, which is similar to the NSW rate (250.5 per 100,000).

In North Coast males, hospitalisation rates were 289.7 per 100,000 population, which is significantly lower than the NSW rate (318.9 per 100,000). There was no significant variation between North Coast females (199.0 per 100,000) and NSW females (202.6 per 100,000).
