Position Description

Purpose of Role:
Practicing and promoting safe, efficient and effective nursing care. Fostering an atmosphere conducive to open communication, problem solving and team building. Assisting, supporting and guiding the education of patients and their relevant persons. Supervising the clinical practice of Student midwives (if applicable). Assisting, supporting and guiding the education and development of Trainee Enrolled Nurses, Enrolled Nurses and fellow Registered Nurses. Promoting Evidence Based Practice and Continuous Quality Improvement within the ward/unit. Participating in the development and evaluation of Evidence Based Clinical Pathways. Participating in health care planning, practice and evaluation. Upholding the policies of the North Coast Area Health Service. Ensuring compliance with legislative requirements. For example – the Poisons Act, Coroners Act, Mental Health Act, Equal Employment Opportunity and Occupational Health and Safety Act and Independent Commission Against Corruption regulations. Ensuring appropriate steps are taken in relation to problem solving regarding patient, family and staff grievances according to Area Health Service policy.

Role Responsibilites:

  • Provision of quality midwifery care for those patients requiring ante natal intrapartum and postpartum care.
  • Provide and/or coordinate the delivery of accountable and responsible patient centred, outcome based midwifery care that reflects current standards of nursing practices and current Area Health Service policies and procedures.
  • Maintain current knowledge and clinical proficiency in midwifery care, in accordance with best practice, legal and professional standards.
  • Practice midwifery within the limits of professional knowledge and expertise.
  • Maintain accurate and relevant patient medical records as per current Health Service policy.
  • Act as patient advocate by ensuring the rights, safety, privacy and confidentiality of patients is maintained.
  • Work in collaboration to coordinate, manage and evaluate patient care activities within a best practice framework.
  • Effectively manage resources and health care regimes.
  • Utilise a problem solving approach in order to provide midwifery care.
  • Assist in building successful teams by supporting ownership for service performance, effectively communicate with teams and support a culture of stewardship.
  • Effectively manage risk.
  • Effectively report, respond to and comply with efforts to minimise critical incidents.
  • Participate in own role review and development.
  • Maintain currency with midwifery requirements and developments.
  • Practice in accordance with ACMI professional code of conduct, ethics and legal parameters.
  • Demonstrate relevant level of proficiency in the use of Information Technology.
  • Assist in the maximisation of the midwifery hours available to meet service requirements within allocated budget.
  • Monitor the work environment to identify workplace health and safety hazards to promote staff well being.
  • Assist with strategies to match cost centre expenditure to budget allocation.
  • Participate in nursing research and local level trials.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the Award of Terms of Employment as may be directed or implied from time to time.

Essential Criteria

  • Registration as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife with the Nurses and Midwives Board (NSW) or ability to acquire same under the Mutual Recognition Act.
  • Demonstrated recent experience, knowledge and competency in Midwifery and ACMI competencies.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication and clinical problem solving skills to maximise patient care.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate patient care independently and in a multidisciplinary team environment providing outcome based care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience as a Generalist Registered Nurse.
  • Availability to participate in a seven day rotating roster (including public holidays and night duty) and an on call roster if needed.
  • Basic computer skills.
