Position Description

Purpose of Role:
Plan, deliver and evaluate the nursing care of allocated patients. Be responsible for their environment, hygiene, nutrition, comfort, observation and safety. Actively participate in identifying areas for improvement, for enhanced customer outcomes. Protect patients privacy, dignity and confidentiality at all times and be able to support them emotionally. Be prepared to act as "patient advocate" and educator to ensure an informed patient with realistic expectations, which embraces wellness or a peaceful death. Maintain technical and clinical skills so as to be able to efficiently and effectively use tools and equipment in the delivery of care.

Role Responsibilites:

  • PROFESSIONAL:- 1.1_ Responsible for upholding philosophy and objectives of the Health Service 1.2 Responsible and accountable for own actions. 1.3 Function within the legal, moral and ethical parameters relevant to the practice setting. 1.4 Maintain professional knowledge and skills related to area of practice and is responsible for own professional development. 1.5 Impart this knowledge and demonstrate these skills to other staff as required. 1.6 Participate in and contribute to educational activities especially in regard to unit tutorials, case conferences and the acquisition of mandatory competencies. 1.7 Set personal goals and evaluate own performance. 1.8 Attend regular staff meetings. 1.9 Participate in the performance appraisal of nursing colleagues. 1.10 Act as an advocate to ensure an informed patient.
  • 2.CLINICAL:- 2.1 Assess patient's needs and plan his/her nursing care. Record findings and document nursing care plan appropriately. 2.2 Be involved in the delivery of such planned care. 2.3 Monitor and evaluate the outcome of given nursing care. 2.4 Correctly compile patients case notes. 2.5 Demonstrate proficiency in documentation skills:- a) non-judgmental commentary b) observations c) chronological reporting d) rationale and outcomes of treatment e) patient education f) discharge planning 2.6 Complete competencies in:- a) Oral Drug Administration b) IV Drug administration c) Drug calculations d) Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation e) Fire Drill f) Manual Handlin g) and any others that may be introduced. 2.7 Co-ordinate, communicate and co-operate with medical officers and other health professionals in regard to patients treatment, care, progress, diagnosis and prognosis. 2.8 Make available to patients support services such as social workers or clergy etc, as needed. 2.9 Maintain an overview and co-ordination role for all patients and staff of unit.
  • 3.STAFF DEVELOPMENT:- 3.1 Maintain an environment which fosters learning by encouraging colleagues, nursing students, and enrolled nurses to participate in patient care discussions and medical rounds whenever possible. 3.2 Co-ordinate ward/unit and staffing activities so that nursing students receive essential and wide ranging experience.
  • 4.MANAGEMENT:- 4.1 Maintain the safe storage and checking of all medications particularly drugs of addiction. 4.2 Ensure the proper handling as safe storage of patients valuables. 4.3 Ensure that adequate supplies and equipment are available for effective patient care. 4.4 Ensure the economical use of supplies. 4.6 Keep the Nursing Unit Manager and/or Clinical Nurse Manager informed of changes in patients condition, untoward incidents, staffing difficulties etc. 4.7 Maintain a ward environment which facilitates patient comfort, safety and efficient nursing care.
  • 5.QUALITY:- 5.1 Assist in implementing quality management systems. 5.2 Assist in gaining and maintaining accreditation.

Essential Criteria

  • Registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board (NSW) or ability to acquire same under the Mutual Recognition Act.
  • Recent postgraduate medical nursing experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to function well within a team.
  • Avaiable to participate in a seven day rotating roster( including public holidays)
