Position Description
Purpose of Role:
Grafton Base Hospital offers registered nurses the opportunity to obtain midwifery skills under the supervision of midwives.
Provision of quality nursing care for those patients requiring Midwifery care.
Maintain currency of knowledge by formal education means and or participation in relevant professional activities and seminars.
Port Macquarie Base Hospital is a referral center and as such nursing staff are responsible for mentoring more junior midwifery students and those interested in developing midwifery nursing skills.
Role Responsibilites:
- Read and be familiar with Women's Care Unit, Birthing Suite and Special Care Nursery references and guidelines and attend duties under direct and/or indirect supervision of a midwife in the ward, nursery or birthing suite as allocated by the Midwifery Unit Manager.
- Using a Best Practice approach, develop knowledge and skills to provide support and advice to mothers and their support persons across the continuum of care.
- Develop knowledge and skills in the management of labour to ensure a safe outcome for mother and baby.
- Ensure that women and their support person/s are courteously received and orientated to the ward.
- Completion of the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery in the twelve month time frame. Attendance at two residential schools in Wagga. Mastery of all clinical skills required by the Nurses and Midwives Board for registration as a midwife. Clinical practice is to include completion of a minimum of 256 hours (8 weeks) Special Care Nursery; 512 hours (16 weeks) Birthing Suite; 256 hours (8 weeks) Antenatal Care and 320 hours (10 weeks) Postnatal Care.
- Undertake three monthly clinical assessments with the midwifery facilitator and or Midwifery Unit Manager.
- Complete twelve month postgraduate experience as outlined in the new graduate package.
- To maintain harmony in the workplace by cooperation and respect for others at all times.
Essential Criteria
- Registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board (NSW) or ability to acquire same under the Mutual Recognition Act.
- Twelve months post graduate general nursing experience (minimum).
- Ability to commit to a two year contract. Prepared to complete the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery through Charles Sturt University within twelve months.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a small multidisciplinary team.
- Computer literacy in word processing and data entry.
- Evidence of compliance with the Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccinations against specified Infectious Diseases.
- Awareness of ACMI competencies.
