Position Description
Purpose of Role:
· Provide holistic patient care to all patients within the Emergency Department.
· Act as patient advocate.
· Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge on all aspects of clinical nursing emergency care.
· Liaise with all staff to assist with maximising patient care activities.
Role Responsibilites:
- Management: *To recognise responsibilities to Nursing Administration and the Nursing Department as a whole. *To be familiar with both the Unit and Organisation manuals and support the hospital policies and philosophies found therein. *To maintain good communication with all hospital staff. *To be involved with ward activities associated with planning of activities and development of the unit.
- Clinical: Triage *Assessment and prioritisation of all patients presenting to the Department. Because of the close dealings with a range of clients, often in time of crisis, this position can be difficult and often frustrating. *To be aware of legal responsibilities when dealing with distressed relatives or patients. *Ensure patients and relatives are kept up-to-date with clinical happenings occurring to their loved one/s. *Act as the patient advocate ensuring all procedures are adequately explained. *Maintain skills required to enable accurate initial and ongoing assessment of all patients, and support such skills with appropriate documentation. *The ability to be able to initiate treatment independently, eg, staunching wound bleeding, icepacks, defibrillation. *An awareness of the limits of nursing practice and the implications of breaking from hospital protocol. *An awareness of surgical procedures, set-ups and general asepsis, eg. Insertion of central lines or chest drains. *A working knowledge of all equipment and their limitations, eg, non-invasive blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeter, spirometry, and pneumatic cuffs. *Maintain (or acquire within six months of appointment) ALS accreditation. *Good communication skills *Knowledge of community support groups and Community Health staff roles, eg. Sexual Assault Service, Psychiatric Social Worker and Drug and alcohol services *Above all, Emergency staff must demonstrate an interest in maintaining their own clinical expertise. *Emergency staff should have an understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses and be prepared to utilise the strengths of their colleagues.
- Education: *Participate with in-service and staff development programmes and maintain current up-to-date clinical expertise. *Assist with orientation of new personnel. *To be willing to further one’s own educational standards for the benefit of the ward and hospital as a whole. This may mean beginning further studies or attending relevant seminars and/or conferences. *To support student nurses in the principles of emergency nursing.
- Professional: *Demonstrate an awareness of OH & S factors affecting the services provided, and the accompanying responsibilities afforded to health care staff. *Be aware of issues relating to EEO principles and the anti-discrimination practices. *Assist with processes associated with the principles of Quality Improvement.
- Ability to work in all areas of the department including the Expressed community care centre
- To attend yearly preformance appraisal
Essential Criteria
- Registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board (NSW) or ability to acquire same under the Mutual Recognition Act.
- Recent experience in emergency nursing.
- Demonstrated knowledge of triage principles and advanced life support.
- Demonstrated experience/qualifications in one or more of the following – Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynae, Orthopaedics, Mental Health.
- Demonstarted knowledge of the electronic medical record First Net and associated computer skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and education.
