Position Description
Purpose of Role:
Provision of acute, rehabilitation and community speech pathology services to inpatients and outpatients from the adult population of Coffs Harbour and surrounds.
Role Responsibilites:
- 1. Provide speech pathology services to the community served by Coffs Harbour Health Campus; Coffs Harbour and surrounds.
- 1.1. Assessment and management of communication and swallowing disorders of adult inpatients of Coffs Harbour Health Campus as directed by the Speech Pathologist – Head of Department (HoD).
- 1.2. Assessment and management of adult outpatients in Coffs Harbour and surrounds requiring speech pathology, including speech, language, voice, stuttering and swallowing disorders, using individual and group contexts where appropriate.
- 1.3. Maintain accurate and up to date patient records in accordance with Health Campus policies.
- 1.4. Preparation of programs to be carried out by nursing staff, families, carers, volunteers and/or significant others where appropriate.
- 1.5. Interview, educate and counsel family members and/or carers where appropriate with respect to swallowing and communication disorders and management strategies.
- 1.6. Liaise with other professionals involved with patients who have swallowing and communication impairments, and refer to other agencies where appropriate for assessment and treatment.
- 1.7. Attend all relevant case conferences and family meetings.
- 1.8. Participate in multidisciplinary and speech pathology team decisions and initiatives as relevant.
- 1.9. Act as a resource to other Speech Pathologists within and outside the Area Health Service for adult speech pathology disorders.
- 2. Administrative Responsibilities
- 2.1. Participate in all Speech Pathology meetings, as required.
- 2.2. Maintain patient records and statistical data.
- 2.3. Consult the Speech Pathologist – HoD with regards to matters of leave (this includes ADOs, Annual and Conference Leave, and Public Holidays).
- 2.4. Liaise with the Speech Pathologist – HoD in the selection and maintenance of equipment relevant to the needs of the Adult Speech Pathology Department, Coffs Harbour Health Campus.
- 2.5. Participate in Quality Improvement activities as they relate to the current working environment and be active in the EQuIP accreditation process, in liaison with the Quality Improvement Coordinator and the Speech Pathologist – HoD.
- 2.6. Comply with Area, Campus and Departmental policies and procedures.
- 2.7. Act in accordance with the Code of Ethics expected by the Speech Pathology Association of Australia.
- 3. Engage in health promotion, inservices and community education activities.
- 3.1. Participate in the planning and implementation of education and in-servicing for nursing, medical, allied health and catering staff on deficits associated with communication and swallowing disorders and methods of managing these.
- 3.2. Provide educational programs to community groups and organisations related to communication and swallowing disorders and their management.
- 3.3. Participate in the planning and implementation of health promotion activities to increase community awareness of adult communication and swallowing difficulties.
- 4. Provide clinical practicum opportunities for Speech Pathology students in consultation with the Speech Pathologist – HoD.
- 5. Demonstrate a commitment to the maintenance of professional standards and ongoing professional development
- 5.1. Pursue new knowledge and evaluation in the professional field related to Speech Pathology and in particular adult communication and swallowing disorders.
- 5.2. Participate in Speech Pathology professional development activities.
- 6. Perform other duties consistent with the Award or Terms of Employment as may be directed or implied from time to time.
- 6.1. In consultation with the Speech Pathologist – HoD ensure that the minimum speech pathology coverage for Coffs Harbour Health Campus is maintained as per Coffs Harbour Health Campus Speech Pathology policy. This includes leave coverage.
Essential Criteria
- 1. Bachelor of Speech Pathology or equivalent and eligibility for practicing membership of Speech Pathology Australia.
- 2. Demonstrated ability to select and apply current theory and clinical practice in the assessment and management of adult communication and swallowing disorders.
- 3. Demonstrated ability and commitment to working in multidisciplinary and speech pathology teams.
- 4. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage an inpatient and outpatient case load.
- 5. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
- 6. Understanding of quality improvement principles and practices.
- 7. Current unencumbered NSW Driver’s Licence.
