Position Description
Purpose of Role:
Provision of nursing care at level of expertise to maximise effective customer outcome
Role Responsibilites:
- Ensure all staff are orientated to all areas within the unit which include admitting area, day procedure area second third stage recovery
- Ensure all required paperwork is available and checked prior to patient entering the operating theatre Any outstanding items will need to be brought to the attention of the required staff. Patients are not to enter theatre unless required documentation is available
- Facilitate all preoperative investigations in a timely manner to reduce any delays to theatre schedule
- Ensure patients returning from operating theatre are managed as per the procedure relating to discharge of patients following anaesthesia
- Maintain patient confidentiality, patient privacy storage of valuables at all times within the unit
- Ensure designated next of kin are aware of the patient progress at all times
- Maintain detailed and accurate documentation in patient notes at all times including postoperative documented instructions to patients
- Ensure all patients treatment (which may include: ongoing care such as showering, medications, investigations, diet lists referrals and discharge planning) is provided to all patients in a timely manner whilst thewy are inpatients within the unit
- Perform clinical interventions within the scope of practice and procedures/ protocols within the unit e.g. blood transfusions venesections, drug infusions
- Assist in preadmission unit as required ensuring all staff has an understanding of the roles of both areas
- Ensure all equipment (including emergency equipment) is checked and maintained on shift basis
- Ensure all infection control guidelines are maintained within unit
- Report any issues within eh unit including delays, incidents Occupational health and safety issues to Nurse Manager Perioperative
- Supervise Enrolled Nursing Staff / Endorsed Enrolled Nurses and nursing students assigned to the unit
- Awareness of the requirement to record incidents within the incident management system (IIMS) following verbal notification to the Nurse Manager or delegate as required
Essential Criteria
- Registered Nurse, currently registered with NSW Nurses and Midwives Board or ability to acquire under the Mutual Recognition Act and possession of a current practising certificate
- Specialty Nursing qualifications and/or relevant recent experience relevant to the Day Surgery and Inpatient Surge bed environment.
- Demonstrated current clinical knowledge and ability to work independently in the specific environment of day surgery, day procedures and inpatient surge bed environment
- Demonstrated understanding of the required department of health requirements specific to Perioperative setting including all aspects of required documentation for patients to enter operating theatre e.g. referral for admission, medical consents, postoperative protocols (23 hour pathways)
- Ability to plan and coordinate patient care in a multidisciplinary team environment providing outcome based care
- Demonstrated commitment and responsibility for professional practice through continuing development of self and others
- Competent in the use of relevant health related computer systems and / or ability to demonstrate learning capabilities
