Position Description

Purpose of Role:
To provide specialist mental health services to clients of the Clarence Valley Mental Health Acute Care Service specifically: triage; assessment; crises intervention, assertive follow up, referral and discharge.

Role Responsibilites:

  • Provide clients of the Acute Care Service with a comprehensive range of clinical therapeutic interventions. • Undertake routine and required interventions, including triage, assessment, crises intervention, assertive follow up, consultation, and referral/discharge. • Manage and/or Administer medications as required.
  • Provide family and careers of clients with appropriate services. • Provide support, information, consultation and referral, as appropriate.
  • Monitor and review all interventions and overall workload on a regular basis. • Review clients as required and at regular clinical review/handover meetings. • Consult with appropriate Psychiatrists, other mental health services, professionals and service agencies as necessary. • Workload review at regular staff meetings
  • Liaise with Acute Inpatient and/or Extended Care mental health services and significant others as necessary. • Provide comprehensive information and documentation to community case managers and significant others regarding interventions with clients.
  • Provide comprehensive documentation of all interventions with clients. • Routine documentation of all professional interventions. • Documentation of all known changes to medication. • Regular review and maintaince of client health care records. • Maintain all agreed unit communication documents and registration/data base systems.
  • Provide services to clients as required in Mental Health Act (2007) and Amendments. • Completion of application for Community Treatment Orders, if required. • Administration of same. • Regular review of same. • Completion of reports to Director of Health Care Agency about same. • Maintain working knowledge of Mental Health Act and Amendments.
  • Participate in development, maintenance and evaluation of local Mental Health Services in line with Area Strategic Plan and National Mental Health Standards. • Attendance at local, Area and State Mental Health planning meetings and other meetings relevant to Mental Health, as appropriate. • Participate in and contribute to Mental Health Service programmes, activities and projects and provide assistance with their design, delivery and evaluation.
  • Maintain a commitment to professional conduct and development. • Attend relevant staff development programmes. • Participate in routine supervision. • Participate in local in-service training arrangements as appropriate. • Participate in annual employee appraisal.
  • Maintain effective working relations with community service agencies and other service providers. • Consult and liaise with relevant agencies as required for specific client interventions. • Respond appropriately to requests for service from such agencies. • Participate in consultative and educational meetings and programmes with such agencies, as required or appropriate. • Engage in Shared Care responsibilities with local GPs.
  • Provide transport/escort for client(s) where consistent with client needs. • Transport/escort client(s) to and from other sites, where needed and appropriate.

Essential Criteria

  • Occupational Therapist eligible for membership of the AOTA; Social Worker eligible for membership of the AASW, Psychologist eligible for Registration in NSW and eligible for membership of the APS, NSW Registered Nurse-List A or eligible for same and eligible for membership of the ACMHN Inc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and practical application of current contemporary clinical practice and standards related to the speciality of mental health, in particular acute care of mental health clients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the National Mental Health Standards (1997), NSW Mental Health Act (2007) and Amendments or equivalent to same, Recovery and Rehabilitation Principles and Best Practice guidelines for service delivery in mental health, particularly acute mental health.
  • Demonstrated level of interpersonal, negotiation, representation, communication and liaison skills, coupled with a sound level of personal integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability of effective computer skills including word processing and internet applications;
  • Current NSW Drivers Licence or eligible for same.
