Position Description
Purpose of Role:
The primary objective of this position is to ensure an optimal standard of patient care and continued improvement of patient outcomes in the Acute Adult Inpatient Unit by providing individual and group programs that promote the psychological, social, emotional, creative and physical well-being of clients admitted to the mental health Acute Adult Inpatient Unit.
To provide opportunities and encourage clients to participate in activities which promote self-esteem and personal fulfilment in a therapeutically social and creative environment
Role Responsibilites:
- CLINICAL SERVICE To exercise independent judgement concerning the selection and application of principles, methods and techniques for the treatment of patients of the clinical service. ƒ¬ Provides an expert patient-centred practice participating in direct patient care provision. ƒ¬ Provides education on complex clinical issues to staff, patients and carers. ƒ¬ Design, implement and evaluate, Best practice individual and group programs in mental health acute adult inpatient units. ƒ¬ Participates/collaborates in the design and conduct of quality improvement initiatives. ƒ¬ Provides complex patient-centred practice within a mixed clinical environment and/or across a series of services. ƒ¬ Develops specialised education resources for patient/carer/community to be utilised by other health professionals.
- CLINICAL LEADERSHIP To provide leadership that facilitates the ongoing development of clinical practice. ƒ¬ Acts as a role model and as an expert clinician in the clinical setting. ƒ¬ Contributes to the development and management of clinical processes. ƒ¬ Provides leadership in the ongoing review of clinical practice at facility or Area health service level as required. ƒ¬ Participates on local, state and national working parties as required. ƒ¬ Assumes leadership roles, which promote broader advancement of clinical practice e.g. leadership of position papers and development of advanced nursing practice standards.
- RESEARCH To initiate and utilise findings of research in the provision of clinical services. ƒ¬ Initiates, conducts and disseminates the findings of locally based research in the speciality. ƒ¬ Participates as a co-researcher in larger studies. ƒ¬ Manages research projects requiring clinical contribution from others. ƒ¬ Adapts and applies related scientific research to a clinical speciality i.e. research from other scientific disciplines applied to nursing. ƒ¬ Initiates original research projects. ƒ¬ Disseminates own research results through specialist publications and presentations.
- EDUCATION To develop and deliver speciality related education programs. ƒ¬ Participates in formal and informal education programs. ƒ¬ Identifies clinical education needs. ƒ¬ Collaborates with others in the development and delivery of education programs. ƒ¬ Develops significant education resources from within their discipline for other staff to utilise.
- CLINICAL SERVICES PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT Participates in formal processes for the strategic and operational planning for the clinical service. ƒ¬ Identifies future issues and new directions for the service. ƒ¬ Contribute to formal service and strategic planning processes within the Unit. ƒ¬ Plans, implements and evaluates annual plan for the position. ƒ¬ Provides ongoing, comprehensive analyses of current practice and the impact of new directions on the clinical specialty service. ƒ¬ Initiates, develops, implements and evaluates strategic changes for the clinical specialty/service.
Essential Criteria
- Occupational Therapist eligible for membership of the AOTA; Social Worker eligible for membership of the AASW, Psychologist eligible for Registration in NSW, NSW Registered Nurse-List A or eligible for Registration in NSW and eligible for membership of ACMHN Inc.
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and practical ability to design, implement and evaluate, Best Practice individual and group programs in mental health adult inpatient units.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the National Mental Health Standards (1997), NSW Mental Health Act (2007) and Amendments or equivalent to same, Recovery and Rehabilitation Principles and Best Practice guidelines for service delivery in mental health, particularly mental health Acute Adult Inpatient.
- Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, negotiation, representation, communication and liaison skills, coupled with a sound level of personal integrity.
- Demonstrated ability of effective advanced computer skills including word processing and internet applications.
- Current NSW Drivers Licence or eligible for same.
