Mental Health Registered Nurses - Acute Adult Inpatient Unit

Position Description

Purpose of Role:
The primary objective of this position is to ensure an optimal standard of patient care and continued improvement of patient outcomes in the Mental Health Acute Adult Inpatient Unit.

Role Responsibilites:

  • Provide patients of the Acute Adult Inpatient Unit with a comprehensive range of nursing practices. • Undertake routine and required interventions, including assessment, case planning, consultation, progress notes, nursing care plans, MHOAT standardised documentation, mandatory reporting mechanisms related to the protection of young children and domestic violence and facilitation of individual and group interventions/programs and referral/discharge processes. • Manage and/or Administer medications as required. • Provide holistic and individualistic patient centred care, with consideration to the physical, socio-economic, psychological and spiritual needs of patients and significant others, in accordance with the philosophy of the Nursing Division and the Mental Health Service. • Demonstrate knowledge of the problem solving approach to patient care by maintaining competent clinical assessments as evidenced by practice. • Provide appropriate education and support to the patients, their family and/or carers. • Be familiar with all emergency procedures and equipment, and use appropriately. • Act as a role model and mentor to assist new nursing staff as required.
  • Monitor and review all interventions and overall workload on a regular basis. • Review patients as required and at regular clinical review/handover meetings. • Consult with appropriate Psychiatrists, other mental health services, professionals and service agencies as necessary. • Workload review at regular handover/staff meetings.
  • Liaise with Extended and/or Acute Care mental health services and significant others as necessary. • Provide comprehensive information and documentation to community case managers and significant others regarding interventions with patients.
  • Provide comprehensive documentation of all interventions with clients. • Routine documentation of all professional interventions. • Documentation of all known changes to medication. • Regular review and maintaince of patient health care records. • Maintain all agreed unit communication documents and registration/data base systems.
  • Provide services to patients as required in Mental Health Act (2007) and Amendments. • Facilitate applications for Community Treatment Orders, if required. • Maintain working knowledge of Mental Health Act and Amendments.
  • Maintain a commitment to Interpersonal Relationships. • Demonstrate commitment to the principles of a multidisciplinary health care team approach. • Foster harmonious and effective communication and relationships with patients and their families, all health care personnel and other persons as appropriate and ensure formal line of communication is followed and maintained.
  • Maintain a commitment to Quality Improvement. • Actively participate in Quality Improvement Activities undertaken in the Unit.
  • Participate in development, maintenance and evaluation of local Mental Health Services in line with Area Strategic Plan and National Mental Health Standards. • Attendance at local, Area and State Mental Health planning meetings and other meetings relevant to Mental Health, as appropriate. • Participate in and contribute to Mental Health Service programmes, activities and projects and provide assistance with their design, delivery and evaluation.
  • Maintain a commitment to Professional Conduct and Development. • Attend relevant staff development programmes. • Participate in routine clinical supervision. • Participate in local in-service training arrangements as appropriate. • Accept responsibility and accountability for personal continuing education, development and practice. • Participate in annual employee appraisal.
  • Maintain effective working relations with community service agencies and other service providers. • Consult and liaise with relevant agencies as required for specific patient interventions. • Respond appropriately to requests for service from such agencies. • Participate in consultative and educational meetings and programmes with such agencies, as required or appropriate. • Engage in Shared Care responsibilities with local GPs.
  • Provide transport/escort for patient(s) where consistent with patient needs and unit program. • Transport/escort patient(s) to and from other sites, where needed and appropriate.

Essential Criteria

  • NSW List A Registered Nurse or eligible for same with experience in mental health nursing and member of, or eligible for, membership of ACMHN Inc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and practical application of current contemporary nursing practice and standards related to the speciality of mental health, in particular acute adult inpatient mental health services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and practical application of the National Mental Health Standards (1997), NSW Mental Health Act (2007) and Amendments or equivalent to same, Recovery and Rehabilitation Principles and Best Practice guidelines for service delivery in mental health, particularly in acute adult inpatient mental health services.
  • Demonstrated level of interpersonal, negotiation, representation, communication and liaison skills, coupled with a sound level of personal integrity;
  • Demonstrated ability of effective computer skills including word processing and internet applications.
  • Current NSW Drivers Licence or eligible for same.
