Nursing Unit Manager - Operating Theatre

Position Description

Purpose of Role:
Coordinate and support the provision of surgical services within the Operating Theatre of Casino Hospital.

Role Responsibilites:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the Operating Theatre.
  • Responsible for the organisation and direction of staff.
  • Assist the Executive Officer/Director of Nursing in strategic planning and fiscal management of the Operating Theatre services.
  • Manage Annual Leave roster for Operating Theatre staff.
  • Provide counselling and instigate performance management/disciplinary action when appropriate.
  • Maintain and review a Continuing Quality Improvement Program for the Units.
  • Maintain a Procedure Manual to enable staff to function safely and effectively.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for environment and staff safety and emergency situations.
  • Maintain knowledge of Equal Employment Opportunity Principles and a capacity to implement Equal Opportunity policies.
  • Represent the Unit on appropriate committees as required.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Site's Executive Offcier/Director of Nursing
  • Maintain and implement an orientation program for new staff and ensure adequate continuing training as necessary.

Essential Criteria

  • Registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board (NSW) or ability to acquire same under the Mutual Recognition Act.
  • Recent Operating Theatre management experience.
  • Holds a tertiary level qualification required for working effectively within the designated position of Nursing Unit Manager, Operating Theatres, or working towards same.
  • Demonstrated experience in cost centre management, financial planning and budgetary expenditure within a nursing environment.
  • Demonstrated high level of communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to consult, liaise and negotiate with all levels of staff, patients and external agencies and the ability to positively influence organisational change.
  • Sound knowledge of continuous quality improvement principles and demonstrated ability to apply such principles in a hospital environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to contemporary Human Resource Management practices at both the broad and specific level.
  • Advanced working knowledge of computers, including word processing, data bases, spreadsheets and reporting mechanisms.
