Position Description
Purpose of Role:
CLINICAL SERVICES:
The Career Medical Officer (CMO) in the Rehabilitation Unit is the primary Medical Officer in the service to provide patient assessment and care and is responsible for all patient admission, assessment and care in the service apart from emergencies occurring when the CMO is not on duty.
The CMO is rostered to work primarily morning shifts Monday to Friday. The CMO is expected to remain in the Department at all times apart from meal breaks, and if required, to respond to Emergencies or escort of patients.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
* Full assessment, admission and care of all patients admitted to the Units. This includes all ages and all conditions.
* Active participation in the admission, care planning, monitoring and evaluation and discharge planning multidisciplinary systems and meetings. * Compliance with documentation requirements including patient care, referral and medication systems.
APPROPRIATE REFERRAL AND PLANNING FOR CONTINUED CARE:
* Referral to the referral centre as indicated.
* Referral to Medical Specialists.
* Referral to General Practitioners for continuing care.
* Referral to Allied Health and support services.
MEDICAL OFFICERS ARE REQUIRED TO BE COMPETENT IN A RANGE OF EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:
* Cardio pulmonary resuscitation, venepuncture, cannulation, respiratory assistance, Interpret Electrocardiographs, order appropriate investigations (Pathology inuing care:and Radiology), Interpret X-ray reports prior to Radiologist reporting, analyse and initiate action in response to Pathology and Radiology results, suturing, fracture stabilisation, plaster application, order and initiate appropriate medication management.
* Management of patients is to be undertaken in conjunction with or in consultation with the Visiting Medical Officers and appropriate Consultants. The Medical Officer is expected to consult when uncertain of patient management and/or patients requiring Specialist Care.
* Transfer of patients to the Referral Units or Hospital. Patients are transferred according to their needs and the urgency of the transfer.
* Transport method and the provision of an escort depends on the patients condition and can include Private car, Hospital car with or without Nurse escort,Patient transport vehicle (non urgent stretcher transport) with or without Nurse escort, Ambulance with or without escort - Medical, Nursing, Ambulance Officer as indicated.
SUPPORT, CONSULTATION AND ADVICE ARE ALSO AVAILABLE:
* Per telephone to Geriatrician or Specialist Physician.
* Per telephone to Director Emergency Department or Senior Medical Officer Emergency Department Lismore Base Hospital.
* Per telephone to Visiting Medical Officers.
* Per telephone to Registrars and Specialist Medical Officers based at Lismore - Physicians, Surgeons, Psychiatrists. Telephone contact with urosurgeons and Neurologists at Brisbane Hospitals is available.
* The Medical Officer provides Emergency care to Inpatients including emergency resuscitation.
* The Medical Officer provides Medical Escort for Inter Hospital transfers when necessary.
* The Medical Officer is responsible for advising the Admitting Visiting Medical Officer of all admissions.
* The Medical Officer has a responsibility to keep the Visiting Medical Staff notified of any significant change in regard to the state of their patients where necessary.
* The Medical Officer will ensure continuing patient care with completion of discharge summaries, referral letters and assessment and follow up care following receipt of investigation reports.
* The Medical Officer is required to have a Medical Provider Number to facilitate referral to Specialists and Prescriber number.
Role Responsibilites:
- The primary responsibilities in this position are:
- The efficient and effective delivery of Patient services in accordance with North Coast Area Health Service, Richmond Network and Lismore Hospital policies and standards, community needs and within budget allocation.
- Participation in Rehabilitation service provision.
- Full assessment and care and effective discharge planning of all patients in the Rehabilitation Unit.
- Effective working in partnership with all service partners so that integrated and networked services are delivered that facilitates patient care and working partnerships.
- The provision of safe, appropriate, patient focussed, outcome directed, coordinated quality care that meets professional standards and is based on best practice standards
- Appropriate referral and continuing care for all patients.
- Response to inpatient clinical Emergencies.
- Escort of some seriously ill patients to referral Department or Hospital.
Essential Criteria
- MB BS or Equivalent and current unconditional Registration with NSW Medical Board
- Minimum Five years Post Graduate experience.
- Relevant Post Graduate Qualifications and relevant Post Graduate experience in rehabilitation, care of persons with aged related conditions and chronic and complex health problems.
- Demonstrated competency in clinical skills including effective assessment, care planning, care provision, case management and management of clinical emergencies.
- Demonstrated ability to provide safe effective patient care, working independently and without direct Supervision.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multi disciplinary team.
- Computer skills.
