Position Description

Purpose of Role:
Within the framework of the vision and policies/guidelines of the North Coast Area Health Service, the Nurse Unit Manager is expected to work collaboratively with the range of multidisciplinary health care professionals and consumers to effectively manage the unit and ensure the provision of quality nursing care to patients presenting for Cardiac Angiography, Cardiac Catheterisation and Coronary Care Services at Lismore Base Hospital. An essential component in the delivery of quality patient care includes effective liaison with other health care professionals, including cardiologists and specialist staff working within the Cardiac Angiography Unit. The Nursing Unit Manager will provide leadership, mentorship and support to the staff and ensure that effective systems are in place within the unit to enhance the strategic direction of the organisation and Nursing Service. This will also include providing direction and guidance to staff using quality management and best practice principles, thereby, ensuring the provision of quality care. The position will also assist staff in the management of change within a complex environment. The Nursing Unit Manager will manage all resources effectively and efficiently, ensuring optimal patient outcomes by promoting best practice through staff development and research.

Role Responsibilites:

  • Promotes the Vision, Mission and Values of the Organisation to all staff.
  • Facilitates effective working relationships with relevant staff, customers and service partners through the use of appropriate communication strategies and systems.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and review of policies and operational plans, in conjunction with staff and service partners.
  • Facilitates the management and function of unit activity within a best practice framework.
  • Identifies nursing hours and service requirements in order to meet dedicated budgets.
  • Identifies unmet physical resource needs and makes recommendations.
  • Implements strategies to ensure that quality is integrated into service provision.
  • Assists staff to integrate changes into everyday practice, as required.
  • Facilitates ethical values inherent in the delivery of health care services.
  • Acts as an advocate for the professional group.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection process.
  • Ensures succession planning plans are in place for this position.
  • Maintains currency with industry trends and developments.
  • Support staff to maintain the currency of their relevant clinical knowledge.
  • Maintains management information systems and applications used within the unit.
  • Establishes meetings which have clear defined terms of reference which are reviewed annually.
  • Participates in own role review and performance development planning.
  • Completes role review and performance appraisal for all staff within the unit.
  • Successfully completes the Advanced Life Support Training for staff yearly.
  • Enforces the wearing of Personal protective Equipment as is required when working in the Coronary Angiography Unit.
  • Ensure Safe Work Practices and safety rules are followed.
  • Ensures appropriate induction of new employees into the workplace.
  • Liaises with relevant parties on alternative duties and Return to Work Plans for injured employees.
  • Performs other duties not inconsistent with the Award, Agreement of Terms of Employment as may be directed or implied from time to time.

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Nurse, currently registered with the New South Wales Nurse’s and Midwives’ Board, or ability to acquire this under the Mutual Recognition Act and posses a current practicing certificate.
  • Extensive senior nursing experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated ability in managing a Cardiac Catheterisation Lab/Coronary Angiography Unit and extensive experience in Cardiac Catheterisations.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide sound effective leadership in the principles and practices of contemporary clinical nursing and nursing management.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills in a multidisciplinary team. Including a demonstrated ability in advocacy, negotiation, coaching, consultation, conflict resolution and problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff in line with human resource management practices, including cost centre management, employment equity, anti-discrimination, Occupational health and Safety, ethical behaviour and demonstrated commitment to their implementation.
  • An understanding of New South Wales Health guidelines relating to the management of coronary angiography patients.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in information technology systems.
