Position Description

Purpose of Role:
To provide an effective and comprehensive professional Audiometry Nursing service to the community as identified by local needs and resources in accordance with area policy To provide professional consultation, clinical assessment and promotion of hearing health Being an expert resource for Nurse Audiometrists within the Network Providing an effective and comprehensive professional hearing service in accordance with Area policy

Role Responsibilites:

  • Being an expert resource for Audiometry services within the Network
  • Provision of hearing assessment services to all persons (as per area policy), ensuring follow-up and appropriate referral to other agencies.
  • Determining the type of hearing assessment required for early identification of ear disease and hearing impairment
  • Providing age appropriate audiometric assessments including history taking, otoscopy, air conduction, bone conduction, tympanometry, masking, infant testing, appropriate referral education and rehabilitation
  • Exercise professional knowledge and judgement in providing complex care requiring advanced clinical skills.
  • Accurate recording of results and maintenance of records, ensuring confidentiality as per Department of Health Policy/Area Policy
  • Provide appropriate advice to client/carer on results with adequate referral including a written report and follow-up instructions
  • To liaise with other professionals in the management of clients and their care. Undertake primary case management of an episode of care
  • Educate clients, families and other professionals in the management of hearing loss to promote optimum ear health
  • Provision of community education regarding all aspects of hearing health issues to health professionals, community groups, schools and relevant organisations
  • Participating in planning, implementing and evaluation health promotion education programs on hearing health issues
  • Being actively involved in the education and training of staff providing hearing services (this could involve student supervision, clinical supervision of TAFE students by accredited supervisors). Provide leadership in the development of nurse audiometry clinical practice and service delivery across the service.
  • Establishing and maintaining networks with hearing professionals and organisations such as ENTs, GPs Audiologists, Australian Hearing, Department of Education, Support groups and hearing health organisations
  • Collection of relevant statistics and data, participation in research to identify service needs and to plan and evaluate health service outcomes
  • To have a working knowledge of audiometric testing equipment, and ensuring regular servicing and annual calibration as per the relevant standard
  • Maintain clinical competence, continuing education and professional development (including attendance at relevant in-services, courses, annual conferences for Nurse Audiometrist professional meetings, supervision and participation in performance appraisal and skills assessment)
  • Participating in the development of policies and procedures relating to hearing services
  • Maintaining a high standard of professionalism and to work in a manner which enhances the profile and integrity of Nurse Audiometry practice
  • Contribute to nursing research by active participation
  • Initiate and co-ordinate quality assurance activities , liaison with other health professionals
  • Implement advances in clinical practice
  • Provide advice to management in the development of clinical services to meet client needs
  • Represent the service in implementation of clinical service delivery
  • Active involvement in providing health promotion programs to the client and community as a whole
  • Adoption of safe working practices and compliance with OH&S Policies to ensure own, co-workers and client safety
  • Practice effective infection control meeting National Standards and Area Health Policies and Guidelines
  • Perform other duties consistent with the Award or terms of Employment as maybe directed or implied from time to time.

Essential Criteria

  • Registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board (NSW) or ability to acquire same under the Mutual Recognition Act.
  • Post graduate/tertiary qualifications in Audiometry and a minimum of three years experience in providing Audiometry services in a community setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide expert clinical advice to clients and their carers/families and other health care professionals about Audiometry.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the requirements of the Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 2 domains as per the Public Health System Nurses and Midwives (State) Award.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills and well developed computer skills, including the ability to use a word processing application, email and internet.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise and consult collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups and organisations in the local community.
  • Current driver’s licence.
