Position Description
Purpose of Role:
NURSING PRACTICE:
Deliver competent nursing care in complex situations.
Act as a resource person in Aged Care within the ward/unit/clinical service.
Provide leadership in the clinical situation and in professional relationships.
Co-ordinate clinical care.
Act as a role model and contribute to the development of self and colleagues.
Support less experienced staff and act as preceptor for new staff.
Contribute to the ongoing review of clinical practice/protocols/policies of Aged Care.
Contribute to the ongoing development of the specialty of Aged Care.
Well developed clinical skills relevant to the specialty of Aged Care.
Demonstrate ability to assess own professional competence, identify limitations and practice within same.
Demonstrate ability to share knowledge and skills.
Engage in activities to enhance own practice and that of colleagues, in own time when necessary.
Role Responsibilites:
- Maintain optimum standards of nursing practice within the Department consistent with the philosophy of Macksville Health Campus and that of the Nursing Division.
- Leadership in the development of nursing Aged Care clinical practice and service delivery in the ward/unit/service
- Initiates and co-ordinates quality assurance activities, liaison with other health professionals;
- Implement advances in clinical practice in Aged Care;
- Provide advice to nursing management in the development of clinical services to meet client needs in Aged Care;
- Represent the ward/unit/service in implementation of clinical service development on delegation from the NUM in Aged Care.
- Adopt a holistic approach to the assessment of elderly patients in relation to their physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs.
- Demonstrate a commitment to gaining increased knowledge in psychogeriatrics and aged care.
- Participate in planning and assuming a lead role in the area of aged care.
- To maintain current knowledge and clinical proficiency in Aged Care and acute care nursing, as defined by best practice, legal and professional standards.
- Maintain currency with industry requirements and developments.
- To participate in the development, implementation and review of clinical operation plans.
- To provide education and support for nursing staff.
- To ensure staff are involved with the appropriate nursing support and supervision that allows learning objectives of Aged care to be attained.
- Contributing to the planning and implementation of educational experiences for all levels of nursing staff.
- To contribute to the development and maintenance of an individual competency list for nursing staff.
- Conduct and analyse an ongoing review of education needs within their unit/department.
- Utilise and encourage a "can do" philosophy.
- Participate in own role review and development.
- To participate in the development of an annual education plan and be responsible for the implementation of components of the plan.
- Participate in nursing research and local level trials.
- Perform other duties consistent with the Award of Terms of Employment as may be directed or implied from time to time.
Essential Criteria
- Current registration with the NSW Nurses and Midwives Board or ability to acquire same under the Mutual Recognition Act with relevant post-registration qualifications in Aged Related field and at least three years experience working in the clinical area of their specified postgraduate qualification.
- Demonstrated leadership in development of nursing specialty clinical practice and service delivery in Aged Care.
- Demonstrated capacity to provide clinical leadership and act as a resource person in the field of Aged Care.
- Demonstrated primary case management of a continuum of speciality care involving inpatient in Aged Care.
- Demonstrate an authorised extended role in Aged Care within your scope of a Registered Nurse.
- Computer literacy and ability to use computer applications and word processing (CERNER, IIMS, Microsoft applications).
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Quality Improvement practices, methodologies and the Accreditation Process.
- Current Drivers Licence.
