Speech Pathology

Speech pathologists in the North Coast Area Health Service generally work within teams of other allied health professionals, to provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment for children and adults with developmental or acquired communication or swallowing difficulties such as:

  • Eating and drinking (difficulty chewing or swallowing food & drink)
  • Speech (difficulty speaking clearly, and being understood)
  • Language (difficulty understanding spoken or written language or expressing ideas clearly)
  • Voice (loss of voice, or a change in voice quality)
  • Stuttering (disruption to the smooth flow, or fluency, of speech)

Speech pathology services are offered in a variety of settings within the NRAHS, including rehabilitation settings, hospitals, Early Intervention programmes and general Community Health centres.

Speech Pathologists may provide treatment as individual or group therapy, home or school/preschool based programs, and education, advice & resources for support workers or carers.

Speech Pathologists are often involved in health promotion activities aiming to encourage communication skills and reduce the risk of developing communication problems.

Search our Service Directory to find the nearest speech patholgist to you.
