Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation aims to bring about the highest level of recovery following the loss of ability. Rehabilitation services aim to restore or maintain day-to-day function and optimise lifestyle choices for people.
Rehabilitation occurs in:
- hospital settings,
- specialised rehabilition inpatient units such as St Vincents Hospital Lismore and Murwillumbah Hospital,
- specialised outpatient units, such as Day Therapy Units, are available at Ballina, Casino, Murwillumbah, and St Vincents Hospital Lismore,
- Community Health Centres, and
- some outreach services are provided in people's homes.
People may require rehabilitation after:
- stroke,
- head injury,
- trauma,
- multiple fractures,
- burns,
- as well as other degenerative conditions.
Children may also require rehabilitation after trauma or neurological damage. Although there is no specialised paediatric rehabilitiaton unit in the area, services are provided by the paediatric therapists, nurses and counsellors within each Community Health team.
