Health Promotion

Generalist Community Health Promotion Officers work with the community and other health workers to plan, develop, promote and evaluate identified programs and strategies to improve the health and well being of their local community.

Programs are promoted and implemented in a variety of ways, such as community awareness raising, running educational sessions, lobbying for policy change and promoting health messages via the media.

Generalist Health Promotion Officers usually work in partnership with local government and non-government organistations to achieve common health goals, for example, working with clubs to promote smoke free areas; with schools to promote healthy canteens and to encourage students to eat more fruit and vegetables.

The generalists also works in partnership with the Public Health Unit at Lismore to help promote and implement identified area-wide projects, such as the 'Tooty Fruity Vegie' Project, Tobacco Action Plan, and Falls Prevention - 'Stay Active Stay Involved' Project.

Throughout the North Coast Area Health Service, there are a number of Generalist Health Promotion Officers, based at the following Community Health Centres:

  • Tweed Heads
  • Byron Bay
  • Ballina
  • Coffs Harbour
  • Lismore
  • Casino
  • Maclean
  • Port Macquarie
  • Grafton
