Dietetics/ Nutrition

Dietitians and Nutritionists perform a wide variety of roles in the North Coast Area Health Service.

What do the various roles involve?

Public Health Nutrition - uses nutrition policies, strategies and programs to maximize health at a population level. The Tooty Fruity Vegie project, and obesity prevention are examples of public health nutrition initiatives.

Community Nutrition - The planning, implementation and evaluation of a mix of nutritional services and activities for local communities based on needs, public health indicators and policy. It addresses local population health issues through food and nutrition related health promotion strategies. For example, strategies to assist people in remote communities to better access to healthy fresh food.

Community Dietetics - the application of dietetics in primary health / community health care settings. Typical work includes group education for people with diabetes and the continuity of care for discharged patients.

Clinical Dietetics - The application of dietetics in hospital or health care institutional settings. Typical work includes enteral and parenteral nutrition, patient and staff education and food service.

Food Service - The formulation of nutritional standards for Area Food Service.
